Your roof sustains a lot in its lifetime, intense summer heat, torrential downpours and potentially more damaging storms.
With recent bad weather here in Connecticut and more serious storms on the way, what should you do to minimize the chance of damage to your roof?
Secure your gutters
Your home’s drainage system is a large contributor to mitigating storm damage. A significant downpour can cause serious damage if your gutters can’t do their job properly; make sure they can by removing debris which could cause blockages.
Once clear, make sure your gutters are attached securely to the home. You don’t want loose drainpipes knocking against your siding!
Trim trees and large bushes
The aim is to remove weak, loose or dead branches which could fly into a window or even onto your roof, causing damage in a storm. This is particularly important if you have trees overhanging the home.
Replace older shingles
Newer shingles are much better equipped to deal with strong winds with some asphalt shingles withstanding speeds of up to 150 mph, conversely older shingles may be meant for 50-60 mph winds. If your roof has old shingles, you may want to schedule a roof replacement to reduce the risk of damage.
Have your roof inspected
If you have any doubt about the integrity of your roof, you may want to schedule an inspection from an experienced roof contractor. Although it may not be possible to fully inspect your roof from the ground, it is a good idea for homeowners to look up at their roof from time to time. Check for any visible missing shingles or damage and schedule a repair as soon as possible.
If any damage should be sustained by your roof, even though your insurance should cover it, if the damage could be proved avoidable your claim may be rejected.
While it may not be possible to prevent all roof damage entirely, being prepared can definitely help to minimize your risk. If you have any questions or concerns about your roof, don’t hesitate to contact us: (860) 546-6292
